Bookcases

This bookshelf was exactly what I was looking for. I chose the textured black finish to mitigate the industrial smooth steel look in order to reduce their impact on the room. I am very happy with that decision. These bookcases are well-built and very sturdy and a great lower cost alternative to wood bookcases. For me the main problem with wood bookcases is their tendency for the shelves to warp and bow when fully loaded with large books. With these bookcases I don't have that problem and I am able to fully load the shelves with anything I desire without concern of warping or bowing. I got this bookshelf unit to replace a particle board bookshelf unit that collapsed under the weight of all my textbooks (I'm a college student). This Hon unit is both sturdy and lightweight (45 pounds). It came completely assembled. [...] One person can carry it alone, but it is bulky. I got the color "putty" which is a grayish beige. I think "putty" is an accurate name for it. Basically, this shelving unit suits my purposes very well... there is only one con I have with it and that's the Hon nameplate in the center of the top shelf. I didn't really notice it in the picture (although it's there). I just find the nameplate to be tacky and annoying. However, as a college student, I'm not trying to have the most fashionable room-- I'm just trying to have strong shelves that won't collapse. I ordered 2 of these bookcases to house my department's professional development library. The structure of the bookcases is very sturdy and professional looking. I ordered two of these bookcases. [...]The instructions for putting the shelves together are clear. You do not need special tools, but a power drill to turn the screws will make it faster and simpler. Having a second person helps but isn't absolutely necessary. Being fit enough to get on the floor and bend around into the shelf IS necessary.Just be aware that there are some minor limits on the heights of the shelves; you can't have any extremely short or tall shelf spaces. Your shelf openings will generally be 11" to 14". This is fine for notebooks, quartos, and file boxes.Once constructed, the bookcases are very sturdy, and they hold lots of books and file boxes well. They look good in my office. I also love the steel construction -- no nauseating off-gassing from particleboard or lacquer. These should be much easier to recycle when that day comes, too.
