Collage artist, Jan Weiss, defines her work as making order out of chaos. The chaos includes a plethora of paper, found objects, postcards, canceled stamps and fabric. The order is the image that comes through the paper. The subject of her art, prints and posters ranges from florals and Victorian to abstract and expressive.
Vintage letters and postcards, some of Weiss’ preferred materials, grant a sense of immortality to the one who sent it, the very one who sat down with fountain pen in hand, to write about their travels, their children; their life in essence. Weiss revels in the fact that the oils from their hand remain on the paper and get passed onto the buyer.
'Now I am a part of their history', she explains, 'I also add the stamp they applied, parts of the envelope the letter was carefully placed into and often a map as a guide to the viewer, sending them back in time to an exotic unknown world.' Jan lives and creates her art, prints and posters in the San Francisco Bay Area with her family and two cats.
