Ansel Adams, born in the San Francisco area of California in 1902 is known for his iconic landscape photographs. He was also an extremely talented pianist as a young child. However a trip to Yosemite and a camera would help change his focus from being a musician to being a photographer, though he wouldn’t realize his true calling until later in life. Music played a large role in his life for many years, but he was enchanted by Yosemite. Eventually he would go on to become an experienced hiker and a tour leader within Yosemite National Park. During his time there he continued to photograph the landscape around him and he eventually had a photograph published in the Sierra Club Bulletin. The Bulletin was a newsletter for the environmental organization the Sierra Club. At this time he was still trying to become an accomplished and recognized pianist, but eventually became very frustrated with the politics that ran the music world.
He worked as a piano teacher and enjoyed photography in his spare time. During this spare time, he ended up creating a photography style that was completely unique at the time. The style was made famous by a photograph known as Monolith, the Face of Half Dome. This photograph was extremely sharp but the lighting of the sky was dark creating a very dramatic looking photograph. He became famous for understanding the lighting of the landscape and knowing when to take a picture that would truly depict the beauty of the landscape. Adams was also extremely talented at helping the photograph turn into a masterpiece in the darkroom. He would work to make sure that certain areas of the photo were lighter or darker than the rest to create the overall emotion and look he thought was perfection. Ansel Adams prints draw the eye into what he felt was the most important part of the landscape when he was taking his photographs. He often tried to use a dropped horizon so he could showcase how big mountain ranges, waterfalls, or other landscapes truly where. In doing this, the viewer feels like they are standing at the base, viewing the scenery in awe.

While placing them in an office or workspace could help you remember to take a step back and breathe during a stressful moment.
