The Universal brand was started in New Britain, Connecticut in 1842 and the manufacturing was continued until 1964 when the General Electric Co. bought the electric appliance end of the business and the non-electrical items were sold to different companies. The chopper division was bought by the Union Manufacturing Co. who built the meat and food choppers until the U.S. Government closed down most of the foundries in the U.S.A. in 1984. Universal bought the chopper business in 1984. Today, Universal is a leader in manufacturing traditional-style kitchen tools and appliances.
