In the 1970's, Paul, Edmund, Alex, and Steven Peykar first became involved in the carpet and area rug business at the retail level, operating a store in Westbury, Long Island. Those years provided the brothers with truly invaluable experience in understanding the needs, the supply and merchandising issues, that confronted retailers who depended on traditional importers and replenishment strategies.
Together, in 1980, the Peykars took these insights and began to turn them into an outstanding success in a wholesale operation with a new and highly focused business philosophy. Initially, the company was called Noury & Sons, in honor of the family patriarch, Noury Peykar. At that time, the Peykars saw a promising future in wholesale because they were able to bring in large assortments of rugs that had not been readily available before. They sought to create new merchandising possibilities with truly programmed handmade collections. Their strategy was to address the retailer's most vital concern – always having the right rug, in the right color and design, when they needed it. The new company worked on the assumption that delivery was going to be the foundation of long term success.
Known today as Nourison, the company that the Peykars founded in 1980 is now the world's leading and most diversified producer and importer of handmade area rugs.
