I needed to replace a similar lamp in my bedroom that I used for general lighting and reading (I always lie on the floor next to the bed to read). The previous lamp had an acrylic top shade and a metal shade for the reading lamp portion. This lamp has glass shades for both. It assembled easily, stands up straight, the finish is smooth and uniform, the lights and switches work, it gives off good light, and the lamp and shades look good. What more could one ask for? And the top lamp is three way,which was a pleasant surprise. You must use a three way bulb in it. For the money this is a fantastic lamp. First, it's big. I'm 5'4" & when fully extended & placed on the floor, it comes up to my chest. I can actually put it on the floor next to my desk to save desk space, or I can place it next to a chair for reading. And it's super bright with the 27 watt CFL which is included. l need a lot of light on my desk since I work at home & have vision issues but this is perfect. It floods the desk area nicely. I used to have a halogen lamp but it gets very hot, but I can hardly feel any heat on my desk even after keeping this on for 8 hours. The base is about 10 inches wide so make sure you have enough room on your desk to dedicate to it. The head swivels 360 degrees, the base is extremely sturdy & won't tip when the lamp is fully extended. The brushed steel looks great. It looks like I spent more than I did. I am using this lamp in my kitchen to light up under the counter for additional stove light. Just the right size and puts out so much light. I was looking for a black light for my new kitchen and this fits perfectly. Good sturdy light with a good base that is not too large.
