I had looked at taking the plunge and buying one of these for a number of years. Now that it's hanging on my wall, I couldn't be happier. My whole family stops to look at it and ask questions about geography, time zones and so forth. It seems very solidly built and I expect it to last decades. The black goatskin vinyl boarder seems high quality, so for most folks it is probably not necessary to upgrade to wood or leather. One caution, the instructions suggest that mounting screws will work in drywall.
