I bought this to compliment a nice Italian pewter chess set. My king is about 3" high and 1" wide at the base. This board fits all the pieces inside the drawers perfectly and looks very nice when playing. The construction seems very durable. My 6 year old son was sitting on the top of it at one point. It has soft felt lined inside the drawer slots and on the bottom of the board. THis item is NOT for travelling because the thing weighs like 5 lbs!
