We purchased this chest to go in a small spare bedroom and it fits the bill perfectly. We needed something to put a television on. Rather than looking for a media cabinet we thought that we could use something with drawers for small storage. We primarily needed a thin console table at the entrance of our hallway (so that corners wouldn't be bumped when passing through) and this piece is a perfect fit at 12 inches deep. What's even better is that we can store stuff inside - I'm more inclined to call it a bookcase. The shelf could be adjustable, however you would need to unscrew the height adjusting tabs in order to move it up or down. We left ours as is and both the top and lower spaces hold generously sized books. The only con was that it will tip forward if the doors are left open, especially if there isn't enough weight inside on the shelves to counter-balance (I caught mine in time before it hit the floor). Mounting it to the wall would fix that problem. And in the listed product information, it is stated that this piece has a distressed finish, however it isn't to the degree of other pieces we have - fairly smooth, even finish.
